Piedmont College welcomes its newest honor society, Delta Mu Delta. This business honor society was founded in 1913 by a Yale professor and a Harvard professor.
It was created for students in the business and academic areas not included in the national chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Its motto is "Through knowledge, power." The power to manage creatively for social and economic good is represented by the society's Greek letters.
Piedmont was able to establish its new chapter because of its membership in the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs. The college received the formal approval for its Lambda Iota chapter of Delta Mu Delta this past December. Since then, advisors have been preparing to induct business students. The first induction will be in November.
The requirements for the business honor society are much like that of any honor society: grade requirements, good conduct and an invitation .
Business students in the top 20 percent of their class are eligible for induction. For Lambda Iota's first induction, the GPA of the potential inductees is 3.9. A total of 15 business students from both campuses have been invited to be inducted. The advisors are awaiting replies to the invitations.
Transfer students can also be inducted by invitation; however, there are certain stipulations regarding their involvement in the business school.
Transfers cannot be considered for induction into Delta Mu Delta until they have completed at least 27 hours in the advanced business program at Piedmont College. This rule prohibits transfer students from being inducted without having established a GPA from Piedmont.
Delta Mu Delta is specifically an honor recognition, not a activities-oriented, society. This gives students the opportunity to be in Delta Mu Delta, as well as a club or society that is activity or extra curricular-oriented.
Piedmont College advisors for Delta Mu Delta are Dr. Steve Carlson, Dr. Mel Coe and Robert Perrella.
Perrella is based at the Athens campus, while Coe is based at the Demorest campus. Carlson commutes between both campuses.
As a business student what do you need to do to be invited into this business honor society?
"Keep your nose to the grindstone and get the best grades possible," says Carlson.
