The Piedmont College Art Department saw their fair share of changes this past summer, bringing in three new faces to contribute to the department's strong reputation. Starting off at the top, the college hired Professor Carl Kelly to assume all the responsibilities of the Department Chair. Kelly originally hails from Tennessee, but received his diploma from the school for American crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
The pottery specialist is coming to Piedmont from Louisiana College where he served as the Assistant Professor of Ceramics. When asked about his aspirations for the department, Kelly immediately began to describe the Anagoma kiln. The wood-fired kiln was designed by Fujuito Juromen of Echizen, Japan and is approximately 20 feet long, paired with a 20 foot chimney.
Kelly will receive assistance in the construction of the kiln from a 10th century potter who will arrive at Piedmont in November. In addition to the kiln, Kelly also plans to organize student trips to museums.
Teaming with Dr. Karl Michele and working under Kelly is new assistant professor and painter Rob Jones. Jones, who is originally from Pennsylvania, received his Masters of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. While at MICA, Jones also served as a member of the adjunct faculty.
Also new to the department is Piedmont alumna Mackenzie Chester. Chester received her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from the college in 2003, then went on to receive her Masters of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Georgia in 2006. While at Piedmont, Chester will serve as adjunct professor.
The works of Kelly, Jones and Chester will mesh with those of Dr. Michele's in the upcoming faculty showcase, which will open on August 21 in the Art Annex.
The exhibition will continue through September 12 and the gallery will be open between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
