Navigator Staff Editorial
byIssue date: 3/17/08 Section: Opinion
Broken doors, a heater that doesn't run and windows that aren't sealed. These are a few of the problems currently faced by members of the Navigator staff; problems with our dorms that have been reported, but not fixed.
This, and the complaints we hear from other students, leads us to question the system behind Piedmont's on-campus maintenance. Is the problem a breakdown in communication between RAs, RDs and the maintenance staff? Or is the problem that there are too few maintenance workers to handle the workload?
Whatever the reason, the problem persists. One member of this staff has been without heat since the snow last semester. The problem has been reported, but still nothing has been done.
If this is a communication problem, then perhaps the system that's in place needs to be reevaluated and fixed. Maybe it would be better if students reported their maintenance needs directly to the maintenance staff, rather than using a go-between.
If it's a staffing issue, then perhaps Piedmont should hire more maintenance workers. Some of the buildings on campus, for example Purcell, are rather old and prone to problems. If the current staff can't keep up through no fault of their own, then something needs to be done.
Whatever the problem, whether system or manpower, it needs to be fixed. While at school, the dorms are our homes. If the heat breaks in your home, you fix it. If the door breaks in your home, you fix it. All we're asking is that if something breaks in our home, it's fixed.
