On March 10, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted five performers. John Mellencamp was one of the more significant inductees this year. Singer/song-writer Leonard Cohen was inducted, as was the other half of the British Invasion, the Dave Clark Five. The Ventures, a pre-Beatles rock band, was also inducted. The fifth inductee may throw you for a loop: Madonna.
That's right, the Like a Virgin Madonna, Material Girl Madonna and sex controversy Madonna. According to the RIAA, she is the Best Selling Female Rock Artist of the 20th century. The Guinness Book of World Records named her the World's Most-Successful Female Musician in 2001.
This year was Madonna's first year of eligibility. A performer is eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Nominees must demonstrate influence and significance in the history of rock and roll. Madonna was inducted by Justin Timberlake.
Many people are upset with the decision to induct Madonna. Steve Morse, who was a member of the nominating committee for seven years, considers her selection an embarrassment.
Morse told the Associated Press, "If you think of rock 'n' roll radio, Madonna is not the first name that comes to mind."
Some veteran rock artists like Deep Purple, Steve Miller and Alice Cooper are still waiting for induction. Madonna's music was never played on rock and roll radio, Morse said.
