Piedmont tennis struggles to find success

Issue date: 2/25/08 Section: Sports
Both the men and women's tennis teams are winless after several matches to open their 2008 seasons.
Head coach Courtney Rutherford continues to try to improve a tennis program that has fallen on tough times since the departure coach Shane Wood.
The men dropped a decision at Roanoke College 6-3 Feb. 16.
The men's team was shut out by Emory University and Sewanee-University of the South earlier this season.
The men opened the season with a 8-1 loss to Millsaps College.
However, with strong performances from senior Joey Leonardo, sophomore David Gillispie and freshman Moses Das, the team has picked up some much needed momentum going into their first conference matchup with LaGrange Feb. 28.
The Lady Lions' tennis team saw much of the same, dropping their first two matches of the year to Sewanee and Roanoke by a combined score of 17-1.
With little experience and no upperclassmen, the women can only improve as the season progresses. The Lady Lions play their first conference match of the year Feb. 28.
