Last season seems a distant past for the Piedmont Lions, who began the 2007 season with a 3-9 record despite the high expectations.
The 2008 Lions have even greater expectations, and are off to a tremendous 8-2 start that included a five game win streak to jumpstart the season.
The Lions swept a two-game weekend series at Millsaps College, using late-inning heroics to do so.
It took 11 innings to earn the win Feb. 23, as the Lions came out on top 7-4.
Millsaps tied the game at four apiece in the seventh inning.
Piedmont then broke the stalemate in the eleventh frame, scoring two runs off the bat of senior Andy House, who smashed a double off the centerfield fence.
Junior Justin Vorherr followed with a two out RBI double, plating House.
Vorherr ended with three doubles.
Senior Tom Dimitroff struck out the side to end the game, a perfect ending to his four and a third innings of scoreless relief that earned him his third win of the season.
The Lions outhit Millsaps 14-6 in the win.
Senior Travis Hunt had four hits, a walk and a stolen base while fellow senior Evan Nissley added two hits and was hit by two pitches. Sophomore Corey Lindsey chipped in with a couple of hits, two RBI and a run scored.
Sophomore Spencer Shelton pitched effectively for Piedmont, lasting six innings while surrendering only two earned runs and striking out five.
The Lions also defeated Millsaps 9-6 on Feb. 24, bringing their current win streak to two.
The men are a perfect 4-0 at home and 4-2 on the road.
More importantly is Piedmont's ability to win close games.
Last season, the Lions were 6-8 in one-run games and 2-2 in extra inning affairs. This season, they sport a 4-1 record in one-run games and a 2-0 mark in extra inning games.
Junior transfer Andrew Migetz continues to swing a hot bat, reaching base safely in ten consecutive games.
The Lions play host to Adrian College Feb. 28 and play a weekend series with visiting Marietta College March 1 and March 2.
Piedmont defeated Adrian 1-0 last season in a 10 inning thriller at Loudermilk Field, and lost a two game set at home against Marietta College, who was ranked eighth nationally in NCAA Division-III baseball.
The Lions' first Great South Athletic Conference game doesn't come until March 28 against Huntindon College at home.
