"We have moved from eight student accounting majors to 40 between two campuses this year," says Janet Forney, associate professor of business.

Forney, along with the Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants, held the fourth annual Cash for Professional Awareness Initiative Feb. 20 in the Lakeside Dining Hall. The Georgia Society of Certified Public Accountants sponsors the event each year for the purpose of creating student awareness of career opportunities in the accounting field.

Students from both the Demorest and Athens' campuses attended the dinner and presentation by three guests speakers.

Steve Claghorn, current professor at Brenau University and certified public accountant, spoke about preparing for the Certified Public Accountant exam. This four-part, 14-and-a-half hour exam takes up to 18 months to complete. Claghorn also promoted his Becker CPA Review course that helps students prepare for the rigorous exam.

"Planning, developing that plan and working the plan. Success will follow," says Claghorn. He's had a successful passing rate on the CPA exam with his Becker review by using these keys to success.

Other speakers included David Sawyer, managing director of Sawyer & Company LLC, and Lee Ellen Fields, Vice President of the Northeast Georgia Chapter of Georgia Society of CPA's.

Sawyer discussed forensic accounting. He spoke about his experiences as a forensic expert, investigating white-collar crime with a focus in fraud. Unlike the other presenters that used PowerPoint presentations during their speeches, Sawyer turned away from his in the middle of his speech. Instead, he decided to make the presentation more personal and hold a discussion with the group of students and professors.

The final presenter, Fields, discussed the advantages of student memberships with her organization, the Northeast Georgia Chapter of Georgia Society of CPA's.
