Piedmont Music students got a unique experience recently when they attended to a performance by the Atlanta Opera. The school provided the music department with the trip because of the opportunity it gave students to see their craft in action, and to see how a metropolitan opera was run.
The faculty that organized the event, including Dr. Barbara Steinhaus, saw it as an opportunity to see a showcase of the best that this region has to offer in vocal performance.
With the excellence in musical performance and solid reputation that Piedmont College has gained in the musical community with programs like Chorale and Chamber Singers, the college has great respect in their respective realm.
As performing arts have become more of an emphasis at Piedmont, the school has recognized their importance. They have given the greater opportunities to gain experiences beyond the classroom.
The students viewed Cold Sassy Tree by Carlisle Floyd in early February. The opera was about the citizens of Cold Sassy Tree, Ga., who are outraged that the town's general store owner, Rucker Lattimore, decides to marry a Yankee milliner who is half his age.
The townspeople reject the new Mrs. Lattimore at church, an event that drove the store propietor to set up a makeshift church in his parlor and then preach his own sermon. Rucker is shot at the end of the day while his store is being robbed.
The townspeople and Rucker's family are finally united with his wife for his funeral.
The students who attended were very impressed with the production and had great appreciation for all of the preparation that went into the performance.
In the future, the music department hopes to continue to provide more opportunities to its students.
