A new club has been created at Piedmont to help support the troops. Several students, along with Piedmont administrator, Linda Pitts, have organized a club that has been in the works for several years called Patriots of Piedmont.
"We just meet together and enjoy each other's company while doing good for others," said Laurel Carter, president of Patriots of Piedmont.
Many projects are already in the works for the Patriots. This month they plan to collect Easter baskets filled with essential items to send to the troops. Other projects include collecting clothes for children, collecting hats for heroes and organizing a book drive.
"It is so easy to help," Pitts said. "Just show up at my door and I can put you to work. No items donated will ever be wasted."
Pitts is in direct contact with the colonel of the 63rd battalion stationed in Fort Gordon. The supplies sent from Piedmont get delivered directly to the colonel and he makes sure they are given out to those in the most need.
Pitts said that although an organized club has not been formed until now, the help of different departments at Piedmont has been incredible from the start.
In December 2006, Piedmont administrator Linda Wofford's son was sent to Iraq. Pitts simply asked for letters to send to him, but by the end of the day dozens of Wal-Mart bags full of supplies filled her office and by the end of the week 15 packages were ready to be sent out to the troops.
"This began the idea for the Patriots of Piedmont and it will continue until the wars ends," Pitts said.
Drew Davis, dean of student affairs, says, "The application process to start and new club is pretty detailed, but if anyone is interested just see me and I can give them all the paperwork."
The first Patriots of Piedmont meeting will be Wed., Feb. 13 at 5 p.m. in the lobby of Daniel Hall.
