After four straight convincing wins in Great South Athletic Conference play and an impressive 14-3 overall record, the Piedmont College Lady Lions have emerged as the front-runner in the conference for the second consecutive year.
The Lady Lions have trampled nine of their last 10 opponents, most recently this past Saturday at LaGrange College.
Strong shooting took the Lady Lions into the locker room with an eight-point lead at the half. But it was the lock-down defense that kept the team in control throughout most of the game.
After LaGrange College pulled off a 7-0 run with several minutes remaining in the second half, Piedmont forced three timely turnovers sending them on a streak of their own.
Senior Sheena Trimiar's stellar double-double performance of 31 points and 14 steals, combined with a striking defensive effort from the entire team, had LaGrange forcing difficult shots all game.
LaGrange could only launch prayers from behind the three-point arc in an attempt to get back in the game.
Trimiar's career game and a second straight double-digit showing by Beth Adcock allowed the Lady Lions to knock off LaGrange 85-69.
With eight conference games remaining, Piedmont won't have much time to celebrate as they come home to take on Wesleyan College Jan. 29, followed by conference-rival Maryville on Feb. 2.
Maryville is currently second in the GSAC standings with a 4-1 record.
