College age students make up 10 percent of the entire U.S. population. This age group also makes up about 14 percent of the voting age population. If students want to have control over their future in the United States, they need to be a part of the process of deciding who runs the nation. This means that students need to vote if they want any say in their future.

Students attending college are encouraged to register to vote and to exercise that right in their hometown. They can also vote in the city where they live while attending college, provided they establish their legal domicile in that city.

Most states have laws that permit qualified voters who are currently enrolled in college to vote by mail. Using an absentee ballot, students vote at the city where they lived prior to moving to college. This is only permitted if the student will be absent from their hometown on Election Day. Students attending college in states other than their home state also have the right to vote by absentee ballot in their home state.

If you'll be away from your hometown on Election Day, and won't be home before an election, you may register to vote by requesting the absentee voter registration form from your city clerk. Names and addresses of all clerks are located on the Web at: www.usa.gov. Unfortunately, students who reside in Georgia are too late to register to vote for the presidential primaries on Feb. 5. This doesn't mean that they can't vote for the president, though.

You should register to vote now. You can do this at the city clerk's office. Remember to bring your driver's license or non-driver ID, if you have one. You will avoid waiting in registration lines on Election Day if you register at least 10 days before the election. You may also register and vote on Election Day.

For any other questions about how you can vote, contact your city's clerk's office.
