Eleven Piedmont art students traveled back to the Roman Empire when visiting the Pompeii: Tales From an Eruption art exhibit at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama.

President Ray Cleere and Rev. Dr. Ashley Cleere chaperoned the trip on Jan. 12. The group visited the home of Piedmont alumni Bill Mason and Bob Schaffer.

The trip also provided a rare chance for these students to spend some time with Piedmont College's First Family.

"The best part of the trip was for the students to see the home of a trustee and alumnus," Ashley Cleere said, "and to get better acquainted with friends of the college who are also art lovers."

Besides the trip to the museum, the students had the opportunity to listen to an art curator and an art appraiser, who gave them incite into the field. However, the students enjoyed the exhibit the most.

"While the jewelry was neat, the best part was probably seeing the old body armor," said sophomore art student Caitlin Hurd.

With all of the rich history that the Pompeii exhibit provided, the journey was exciting and informative. Art professors Chris Dockery and Lori Phillips accompanied the students.

The exhibit ran from Oct. 14 to Jan. 27, and will now move on to the Houston Museum of Fine Art in Texas. It will then retire to the museum in Naples, Italy.
