Non-music majors take applied music lessons

Issue date: 1/28/08 Section: A&E
At the end of every semester students in the music department come together for the student recitals. But among the various music students is something else; non-music majors join in with the music majors to participate in these recitals. The reason for this is that they are taking applied music lessons in addition to their other classes.
The Piedmont College music department offers applied music lessons in voice, piano, guitar, organ, brass, woodwinds and conducting. It is not required, however, that you be a music major to take these lessons. Any Piedmont College student currently enrolled at the school is eligible to take applied music lessons.
Tomas Montilla, a business major, takes guitars lessons with the music department. He says, "I think it is always a good thing to learn a new skill."
Katie Sawhill, a theater major at Piedmont, has taken voice lessons since she started. Sawhill says she believes it is a good thing for students to be exposed to what the music department has to offer. She thinks, however, that it is important that students realize the lessons will focus on a more classical, as opposed to pop, style.
The lessons count as a one credit hour course and can be taken for multiple semesters. A student can also take more than one lesson per semester. The lessons are taught by the staff of the music department and consists of 30 minute private sessions held once a week.
Any student taking applied music lessons is required to attend five recitals that range from Piedmont students' performances to groups from outside that the college bring in.
In order to take applied music lessons, however, a student must get permission from Dr. Wallace Hinson, the music department chair. For more information, contact Dr. Hinson at (706)-778-8500 ext. 1211.
