President Bush has announced a new policy that will help stabilize the government of Iraq. The policy will include establishing benchmarks that the Iraqi government will be expected to reach.
The plan will include trying to get more Sunnis and Baath Party member to take part in the political process, the New York Times reported. The United States plans to hold Iraq to a timetable to reach the goals, but officials would not go into details about what specific penalties would be.
Bush is expected to offer his official strategy as early as Wednesday. Many lawmakers, both Democrat and Republican, are already commenting about the possible changes. Many people in Washington are predicting rising troop levels, greater financial commitment and still no timeframe for withdrawal. As usual most of the talk is focused on the opposition to Bush's plan. However, many Democrats recognize that their power to stop his plan is limited.
As we all have learned over the last few months, there is nothing we can do to convince the President to pullout of Iraq. He has a plan. He believes in his plan. We know at this point that the President is going to do what he thinks needs to be done. All we can do is support him. This is the same as supporting the troops. Whether you agree with why we are in Iraq or not, you need to support the troops. They have to know that we are behind them. This will give them hope and hopefully bring them home sooner. If we put our support behind the President then it will have the same affect. Whether you agree or not is not the point. The point is that we have to support our country during this time. If everyone just put aside his or her disapproval then we might get out of Iraq faster than expected. We can't know for sure what will happen in the future, but what could it hurt to be a little more supportive of the country we live in.
