Christmas is celebrated all around the world, and it is supposed to be a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. This celebration seems to be forgotten, and it is clear that Christmas is becoming more of a commercial venture. Our beliefs and traditions of gift exchanging comes from the belief that God gave his son to us, we give gifts as a symbol of love and appreciation. Christmas is no longer a time of celebration and enjoyment, but it is stressful, and draining of funds leaving many people in debt as a result.
Given the insanity of this past Christmas, several assaults and even shootings occurred after the launch of Sony's PlayStation 3, I feel it is a good time for people to stop and try to remember the true purpose of Christmas. With these extreme examples of how Christmas is being sold with the high price "must have item of the season", and no longer celebrated as a spiritual day, I ask you to ask yourself what does Christmas mean to you? Is Christmas a day of fulfilling your life by caring for others and giving? Or, is Christmas a bumper sticker that reads; "The one who dies with the most toys wins"?
This past Christmas with my family was spent remembering Jesus Christ by attending Christmas Mass, and finding ways to give to one another as well as to others. I believe that people are forgetting the true meaning of Christmas, and some day the true meaning of Christmas will be lost completely. I hope that even with the Christmas season over for now, people will not forget how we lost the Christmas spirit. Spend this year trying to find it again, and bring it back for Christmas in 2007.
